1- Select the appropriate size cylinder. You will need one inch of clearance around your model and between the tip of the sprue and the top of the flask.
2- Attach the tree (gate, gate model assembly) to a piece of brick or plywood via a pouring cup. You need to melt the pouring cup onto the board so it sticks. Wood boards with a rough surface, such as fiberstone, work best.
3- De-aeration of castings. Brush on some defoamer solution. This is basically a soapy water mixture that prevents air bubbles from sticking to the casting. When the casting is formed, air bubbles on the surface of the casting can turn into metal warts. They can be removed afterwards, so bubbles aren't completely catastrophic, but it's better not to have them.
4- Place the cylinder around the tree making sure there is good clearance. Create a wax fillet on the outside of the flask between the flask and the plate. A good method is to use a disposable 2-inch paint brush. Dip the brush into the melted wax and brush over the bottom of the flask to create fillets. This fillet will seal the stucco so it won't seep through. If you don't have a brush, you can cut a strip of wax and melt it around the base, then tap the fillet with a propane torch to improve the seal.
